Reasons for the development of 2.5g/5g Ethernet technology
With the commercial use of high-speed 802.11ac, the access rate of wireless terminal can reach 1.3gbps; and in the subsequent evolution of 802.11ac WAVE2 and 802.11ax (WiFi 6), the highest access rate of wireless terminal can reach 6.9gbps and 9.6Gbps theoretically. However, the current access switch is generally Gigabit port, obviously unable to meet the requirements of subsequent wireless network connection.
Of course, although the 10 Gigabit switch (10Gbps) can provide higher bandwidth, the 10 Gigabit port needs to be equipped with Cat 6 / 6A or above cable, which will cause a lot of inconvenience in network wiring. At the same time, there is no way to utilize the existing cable (such as cat 5e) which has been widely deployed in the network, which will greatly increase the it cost investment of enterprises.
Application advantages of 2.5g/5g Ethernet Technology
In order to meet the needs of the further development of high-speed network data transmission, IEEE 802.3bz standard was officially released by the IEEE Institute in 2016, which includes two network transmission rate specifications of 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps.
1、Higher transmission rate
2.5g/5g Ethernet is based on 10G Ethernet to adjust and drop time pulse / rate. IEEE 802.3bz standard is like Gigabit Ethernet, which uses 4 pairs of wires to be responsible for transmission (TX) and reception (Rx), but the transmission capacity of each pair of wires is improved to 625mbps and 1250mbbps, so the total transmission speed can reach 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps.
In view of the excellent compatibility of IEEE 802.3bz standard, cat 5E cable can be used for 2.5G Ethernet, while Cat 6 cable can be used for 5g Ethernet, and the basic transmission distance can reach 100 meters. Therefore, after using the IEEE 802.3bz standard, not only does it not need to increase the cost of wiring, but also it can achieve up to five times the data transmission rate.
IEEE 802.3bz standard network is downward compatible with 100m, 1000Mbps, 10g and other Ethernet rates. If the 2.5g/5g port is connected with other rate ports, the same working parameters are automatically selected through the self negotiation function, so that the transmission capacity can reach the maximum value that both sides can support。
